History of poi prop and skill
Poi refers to a pendulum-like prop (weight on a string), as well as to the skill of manipulating this prop. Like juggling, poi is often seen as a medium in performing arts and flow arts, but as well as a recreation which empowers one's coordination, motor skills, and brain development in a similar way as Brain Gym exercises. When poi manipulating, the accent is on various rhythmical and geometrical patterns incurred while poi swinging and spinning, combined with the movement of the performer.
As it is known by now, poi originates from Maori people (New Zeland). Maori used poi for exercising and social games, and the gained skill they used in martial arts and traditional performing art (Kapa Haka).
Today, poi is spread worldwide, still with the same purpose, with plenty of variations.
